So, back from vacation and work has started. Boy it is exciting entering a new campus, new facilities and having my own desk and office space which I don’t have to share. I can’t tell you how thrilled I am to have such studious students this term. They are truly amazing and I enjoy working with them. The other day I discovered a girl who was a true rare case scenario. She has the perfect story for a Bollywood hit. So here goes… I met a student who was 35 years old and had a 22 year old daughter. You heard of the show, “16 and Pregnant”? Try ’13 and pregnant’! Yea that’s news that sure does hit the news. But she is different. She got married at a young age and now has seven children. Surprisingly, she is Indian, from one of the leading IT industries in the world, Hyderabad, India. Yup that’s right! She is an Indian girl married to a Saudi, not just any Saudi – no, he is not royal – don’t think too far- he is a Bedouin. At the time of their marriage, they did not know each other’s language. So she learned Arabic after marriage and is now totally fluent. So what kind of marriage was it? It was arranged. I know, I know what questions might be coming to your head. Read further to find out…
So her husband’s father and her father had a friend who had a connection-friend in KSA and India that hooked them up. This was not an internet marriage as those things weren’t available back in those days. The surprising thing is that their culture, language, food, ways and habits are universes apart. Indians love spicy food like fire – Arabs can’t stand it – Indians are way more conservative (in the past) – Arabs are not that conservative. You know what I’m trying to get at. So bringing this to an end, she was a remarkable woman, who looks dashing for 7 kids and is happy spending her life with her Bedouin husband and family. I was like wow, “You are the highlight of my day!” Stay tuned for more.
